OMG! I was just watching the movie again (of course) and in the bowling room scene, after DP is screaming his head off about "I AM THE THIRD REVELATION" right after he smacks his piss pot with a bowling ball, he tells Eli, "I told you I would eat you. I told you I would eat you up." Is that what he said after the baptism???????????????

Ok, everybody, since we all love competition so much, can anyone figure out what DP says when the meeting breaks out in chaos? He finishes his speech, people start to go crazy, he does that weird thing with his mouth, and then, he mouths some word, but I cannot make it out! I am dying to know what it is, can any observant viewer figure this out? Have fun.

This film really had some beautiful work as far as music goes. The original scoring and the select classical pieces present a wonderful juxtaposition that adds such a depth and complexity to an already superb film. Everything meshes together so well, there is not a single moment where the music is out of place or out of synch with the mood and setting.

I particularly love PTA for bookending his bloody chronicle with the Brahms concerto (as you may surmise by my SN). It's such an upbeat and lively piece -almost flippant, considering the context. In a way that's fitting since in that aspect it's consistent with DP's irreverence and unapologetic, cavalier attitude towards most everything... I'll never be able to listen to it the same way again because now in my mind, it's almost like it's been christened as DP's unofficial Hymn to Oil or something like that.

Now I can appreciate a lot of different kinds of music but when it comes to critiquing and analyzing it knowledgeably that's an entirely different matter altogether. So my question is, can Brahms's Violin Concerto in D major be analyzed and discussed within the context of the film? Is it possible? Any conservatory students or someone who knows anything about composition in our forum...?

I've been noticing a few discussions about Mary Sunday and her relationship to Daniel. A recent one was dealing with abuse in Daniel's childhood.

I just have a few thoughts based on what I believe is the real relationship.

First - Daniel doesn't care about whether or not Abel beat any of the other children and I suspect he doesn't really care about Mary. Notice the beat when HW brings up her name before Daniel speaks. The first time I saw TWBB, I felt like Daniel as a father was reacting to his son taking his first interest in a girl. From then on, it is as if Daniel has decided that whatever HW wants, he will provide. If it's "the younger" (he didn't care to even know her name before) - so be it. HW had made his choice.

Second - at the day of the blessing, notice the absurdly elaborate - for those parts - white dress (wedding), his position between HW and Mary at the Derrick (the altar), the ceremony of opening the well ("I now pronounce you") and the wedding gift ("You father won't be beating you anymore....."), giving away the bride ("Now go and play and don't come back").

Okay - maybe it's just my overactive imagination.

The Sunday girl who marries H.W. says that her father beats her if she doesn't pray, which doesn't seem like the father at all. Also, in the bowling alley, Eli keeps referring to Daniel as a "brother" through marriage when in fact he would be H.W.'s brother through marriage.

One way to judge the impact of a work is to look at the ways it enters the mainstream (popular) culture through parody.
We've seen the SNL send ups, and the various YouTube creations... but there is much more out there, if one knows where to look. Some are quite obvious references to TWBB, while others are a great deal more subtle. The purpose, then, of this discussion is to ask you to post your favorite TWBB parody... Try to find something different, and funny (of course).
I'll lead off with something obscure...that should give a laugh.

This has probably been discussed to the point of boredom here, but does anyone else think the baptism scene might be the best single scene of the film as far as DDL acting goes? I've seen this film three times now and that scene just captivates me. the looks he gives Eli when he mentions his abandoning his son and the way he shouts it, it just feels like this is the final nail in the coffin as far as what is left of his humanity. The scene just pulverizes me emotionally. I can't begin to say why but the acting in this scene is beyond classic. The whole film has floored me and it rivets me so damn much and I plan on seeing it twice more at least. It's a great flick that rewards the multiple viewer but i'm telling you again, this scene is as wonderful as anything I have seen in a long time.

They have to be identical twins, right? I don't think it's a fantastical metaphor/narrative technique or something, because the film doesn't veer into that realm elsewhere. Besides, if it were Eli, what did he spend the initial money on, and why did he act so clueless when he met Daniel again, alone?

Either way, the Sunday family needs some sort of exorcism themselves.

(Warning: the following post is tongue-in-cheek)

I had only one thought when I saw the trailer for THERE WILL BE BLOOD several months ago:

"Sweet dancing lollipops, he's back."

Look. Daniel Day-Lewis is a brilliant actor. One of the greatest alive.
He utterly transforms himself and disappears into whatever role he
does. Much like Gary Oldman, (generally, there are exceptions, I'm
sure) no single DDL performance is alike. And yet, when I watched that
trailer, did anyone else see what I saw?

It's Bill. It's William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting.

No,
seriously, think about it. Sure, he died in the draft riots of 1863, but he was so
badass and malevolent that, when he died, he instantly was reincarnated in Wisconsin,
and grew up to become an oil baron by the turn of the century. Bill died
because he was out-of-touch with what his beloved country was becoming,
so he just reinvented himself into a brand new dark vision of America.

That's what I was thinking at the time. Then I actually saw the movie, and yes, yes there were some differences. But on more than one occasion, particular at the end... there he was. Emaciated and aged from a lifetime of hatred and booze, but he was there. With his deep-seated desire for a family and a son stronger than ever.

I'm not the only one seeing Bill in Daniel, as many reviewers keep comparing GANGS OF NEW YORK to THERE WILL BE BLOOD in parts. One line of note, from Nathan Rabin of the A.V. Club:

"Larger than life" doesn't begin to do justice to Day Lewis'
performance in THERE WILL BE BLOOD. As in GANGS OF NEW YORK, Lewis
plays a man so forceful and towering that he could probably wrestle a
full-grown grizzly bear onscreen and have audiences worried primarily
about the bear's safety.

He can't be stopped. No matter what ultimately happened to Daniel Plainview, the terrifying man with the mighty 'stache will live on and on. He's just too hardcore to die.

I just saw the film and enjoyed it but have a few questions that I am puzzled about.

parts of the film seemed out of order. I'm well used to films shot in reverse order, or with foreshadowing, but i just read the wikipedia plot, and it never once mentioned the unordered sequence of scenes, which makes me wonder if I saw a different version somehow.
for example. the trip that Plainview takes to survey the pipeline, is taken with some un-named person, who you assume is just a nobody assistant. then once they make it to the sea, he suddenly has speaking parts, then AFTER he is killed by Plainview for being an impostor, Plainview's brother, Henry shows up at the ranch. The plot outline in wikipedia makes no mention of this, but puts the arrival of henry BEFORE the pipeline survey.

It just seems odd and out of place, like it wasn't supposed to be that way - most films that show scenes out of sequence make it very obvious whats happening, andI'm just wondering what other people think

So I'm sitting in the steam room -- I always have my best ideas in the steam room -- when I realized that perhaps if PTA doesn't want to do a commentary track for the There Will be Blood DVD, perhaps we should?

There are a lot of knowledgeable people with strong ideas about the movie on this site, and I figure if we pooled them, we could come up with something pretty interesting -- at the very least, it'd be another excuse to watch the movie one more time.

I'm not quite sure yet how exactly to go about this but I thought I'd just throw the idea out there and see what you guys think. We could divide the film up into scenes, we could divide up interesting topics, or we could basically just agree on a length for each submission and see what happens. Then people would submit audio files to me, I'd edit them together to fit with the movie and post it as a single mp3 you could play along to the film.

Does this sound like something you might be interested in? Drop me a line jurgen@idrinkyourmilkshake.com or reply below, and once I gauge interest, we can come up with some more specific guidelines to make this work. I already know that it should to end with all participants saying "I drink your milkshake" over the final credits!

This is perhaps my favorite book, but I have severe reservations of it being made into a movie. Not only am I troubled by the fact that Ridley Scott is making it (Im not interestedin the arguments for Blade Runner), Im troubled by the thought of anyone doing it. Not that PT couldnt, however, once expectation are put upon a savoir to come save the day, it could really ruin alot of things. But I am troubled now by the need to see it on screen, I juat think that the prospect for its success is minimal.

What is your favorite spoof or parody of the "I drink your milkshake!" speech? There have been spoofs by Saturday Night Live, by the comedy duo Smosh, on Jimmy Kimmel...there have literally been a hundred or more spoofs at youtube. There have even been contests to see who could do the best job of spoofing or recreating the scene. If you go here http://jviz.blogspot.com/2008/04/milkshake-scene.html there is a pretty good rundown of all the funniest spoofs and best recreations of this scene all around the web.

What is your favorite spoof, parody, or recreation of the milkshake scene? Is there a good one anyone knows of that the rest of us have missed?
