I think Tilford gets away -- Daniel humiliates him in the restaurant (or so he thinks) and that's good enough for him. Plainview only goes that extra mile of actually killing people when they turn out to be treacherous competitors who insinuate himself into his family rather than just telling him how to run it. Compared to Eli, Tilford is small fry.

H. M. Tilford= Henry Morgan Tilford (was the real vice-president of Standard Oil for over twenty years)

J. J. Carter= John Joyce Carter (was a real person whose oil company was subsidized by Standard Oil in late 1800s)

There was also a real-life H. B. Ailman (the name of HW's biological father) named Henry B. Ailman, who was a silver miner/eventual oil associate of real-life oil magnate Edward L. Doheny (of whom Plainivew was partly based).

The name "A. C. Maude" is heard mentioned in the film. There was a real-life A. C. Maude who published the community newspaper in Bakersfield, CA during the turn of the century (Bakersfield is where the vast majority of CA's oil wells were located).

I have no idea where "H. W." came from.

Just as a trivia thing while we're on the topic of names: the script says Plainview's full name is "Daniel Caldecot Plainview".
