Do you think Plainview ever slit H.M.'s throat like he said he was gonna do? I think he probably did, that crazy bastard.

  2.

The problem was DP made that threat in front of a witness, J.J. Carter, and Tilford later repeated it to his other Standard buddies in the restaurant.

  3.

Good point, good point. And it would be rather unlikely that he whacked all the witnesses as well. So I'm guessing he didn't now.

  4.

I think Tilford gets away -- Daniel humiliates him in the restaurant (or so he thinks) and that's good enough for him. Plainview only goes that extra mile of actually killing people when they turn out to be treacherous competitors who insinuate himself into his family rather than just telling him how to run it. Compared to Eli, Tilford is small fry.

  5.

lol, I really like the old man in the first scene with Tilford who claims that he has "scratched around in the dirt." Great comic touch.

  6.

We discussed in another thread that old man was probably a Plainview himself.

  7.

    huh?

I think Tilford was smart enough not to make any unannounced visits to the Plainview mansion.

  8.

Cinema, I believe Shperdess was saying that in a previous thread that old dude that sasy, "Ive scratched aorund in the dirt son," was most likely and old badass who has done his share of digging holes in the ground just like Daniel Plainview.

  9.

Oh ok, gotchya. I could kinda see that.

  10.

Does anyone know what H.M. stands for?

  11.

Humble and Magnanimous (Sorry, I dont know)

Let's see we've got: HW Plainview, HM Tilford, JJ Carter, have I missed anyone?

  12.

Lol, I wonder why so many anonymous initials. Style?

  13.

    H. M. Tilford= Henry Morgan Tilford (was the real vice-president of Standard Oil for over twenty years)

    J. J. Carter= John Joyce Carter (was a real person whose oil company was subsidized by Standard Oil in late 1800s)

There was also a real-life H. B. Ailman (the name of HW's biological father) named Henry B. Ailman, who was a silver miner/eventual oil associate of real-life oil magnate Edward L. Doheny (of whom Plainivew was partly based).

Speaking of Ailman, there's a homemade video series about the Ailmans and PTA's use of their name by HB's grandson here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=cvJJMspzl9g

The name "A. C. Maude" is heard mentioned in the film. There was a real-life A. C. Maude who published the community newspaper in Bakersfield, CA during the turn of the century (Bakersfield is where the vast majority of CA's oil wells were located).

I have no idea where "H. W." came from.

Just as a trivia thing while we're on the topic of names: the script says Plainview's full name is "Daniel Caldecot Plainview".

    plainviewoil,

Thanks for this great post! I loved the Ailman family history on youtube.

  15.

I guess going by initials was just the fashion back then. Two of my great-grandfathers did, as did two of my three grandfathers. Come to think of it, so do I.Or at any rate, I sign my initials.

  16.

    Plainviewoil, well done, sir, mam.
