I thought you all might enjoy some photos of Greystone Mansion, which was used for the interiors of the film's final scenes.

Fittingly, the mansion was built by Ned Doheny (the only son of Edward L. Doheny, early oil magnate born in Fond du Lac and inspiration for Upton Sinclair's Joe Ross, who then evolved into you-know-who). Ned Doheny was shot and killed in a reported murder-suicide involving a close associate. Some speculate it had something to do with Ned acting as his father's bagman to deliver a bribe to Senator Fall (of "I drink your milkshake" fame).

Alas, no photos here of the bowling alley. It was only recently restored by Jack Fisk and crew for TWBB.

    Great pics and history!

  3.

I'd kill to see the floor plans. I wonder why they used a different house for the exterior establishing shot.

Shortly after I looked at this post last night, I was going through some old files, including some stuff with photocopies from old architectural magazines, and found an article on and plans of the Doheny family ranch house. Spanish-style, one-story, U-shaped,  five main bedroom, two  others for servants...and a large chapel.

  4.

Here's an article from the LA Times on filming TWBB at Greystone.

  5.

Where do you think that Daniel Plainview's mansion is located?  Little Boston, Font De Lac, Texas, Beverly Hills. Do they ever tell us?

  6.

i always figured he built it right on the beach like he said he would....but i dont think they ever say.

  7.

Hmmm, I don't think he'd stay in Little Boston as he wanted to "get away" from everyone, but I don't think he'd go back to Fond Du Lac either as he wasn't the sentimental type.

Though he could probably get a good milkshake in Fond Du Lac.

  8.

that article makes you realize the biggest crime of the oscars was jack fisk losing.

  9.

This is to continue the discussion from the thread about Plainview Mansion's exterior. I include it here because it relates to the article posted above by quail_prices about filming TWBB at Greystone.

The first letter in the link below is from Joe Dante and he refers to Greystone's starring role in a 1960s sci-fi film. Hey man, dig the bowling alley!

I figured his mansion was in the Los Angeles area.  I'm basing this on the way Eli says that Bandy's grandson is eager "to come to Hollywood."

  11.

I also figured the mansion was in the Los Angeles area. This was partly preconceived (lame, I know) because of the fact that Greystone is in Beverly Hills. But also, as jk points out, Eli says "come to Hollywood" instead of "go to Hollywood."

I just assumed that evangelical superstar Eli was living and working in Los Angeles because PTA said Eli was partly based on Aimee Semple McPherson, a Canadian farm girl who made it big in L.A. So--in this theory--Eli and DP both live in L.A., but Eli never calls on Daniel until he needs something.

Interesting, because we hear Daniel's radio in the earlier office scene.  I wonder if he ever listened to Eli.  I'm betting "yes."

  12.

sues, I'm glad you brought up Daniel's radio. I would love to know if that's a recording of an actual baseball game.

I wonder if there's any way to find out?   Would that it have to be credited at the end?

Last week I watched the entire 12 episode 1991 revival of "Dark Shadows." About 98% of it was shot at Greystone Mansion. It's a great way to get a better view of the house. Vampire Barnabas Collins spends most of his waking hours in the same room that was Daniel Plainview's office. There are several shots of the winding basement stairs (though the ones they show go clockwise, while the ones in TWBB go counter-clockwise, which means that 1--there's  two matching basement stairs, one going clockwise and one going counter-clockwise, or 2--somebody flipped  the negative).

Barnabas's coffin is kept in a smoky basement chamber, and  I believe part of the bowling alley is used as an 18th-century jail cell. and a detailed model of the house is used for opening and closing credits, as well as establishing shots. And there are several scenes that take place in that tiled foyer where DP does his target practice.

    Dark Shadows - Absolutely marvelous!

I used to LOVE it!  The acting was so terrible, but they did have some good, creepy ideas.

  15.

Well, I'm not talking the classic soap opera from the late 60s to early 70s. I'm a big fan of that, though. Addicted to it as a child. Probably helped warp me.

The thing I mean is a short-lived revival  that came out around 1990 or 1991 and only lasted 12 episodes.

OK, I was confused because the old one seemed to have very different sets.  I didn't even know they did a revival!  That would have been fun, I'll have to check it out.
