OK, what motivates HW to start the fire?
I just assumed he was emotional and acting out. He just lost his hearing, so he's already going through a lot, and now his dad's brother shows up and takes all the attention. Daniel seems to need one person for companionship, and he tries to replace HW with Henry in the middle of the movie. So I thought that was HW's problem.
My wife assumed immediately that HW had read Henry's diary (or whoever's diary that was), figured out what Henry was up to, and set the fire as an attack on Henry. I've seen the movie twice and I still think I'm right, but there are reasons to believe either theory:
FOR HW FIGURING OUT THE SCAM:
* HW looks suspicious of Henry the very first time they meet
* HW looks at Henry's stuff, including a diary, and sets the fire soon after
* In addition to the diary, HW finds a photograph of a woman and what looks like an advertisement for guns (?) I don't know what either of those might mean.
* If he hasn't figured something out, what is the point of showing him looking a the stuff?
FOR HW NOT FIGURING ANYTHING OUT EXCEPT THAT HE WAS BEING REPLACED IN DANIEL'S HEART:
* Maybe HW just looks jealous/threatened when he meets Henry, not suspicious
* We see HW looking at Henry's stuff, but does he even read the diary? We only see him looking at it upside-down. And can he even read at this point? He's never been to school or had a teacher.
* Even if he could read it, what could he have figured out? Was it Henry's diary or Daniel's real brother's? If it was Henry's, he might have written about his plot. If it was Daniel's real brother's, HW could read it and still not know that Henry wasn't the guy who wrote it.
Well clearly he can't read seeing as how the diary was upside down when he was going through it.
In my opinion, it was just him being intuitive and feeling something wasn't right, but being unable to express this to Daniel.
I'm much more inclined to go with the emotional/acting out motivation. H.W. didn't know yet how to read, but the picture of the mother in the diary (which was Daniel's real brother's) seemed to legitimize Henry's possible importance to Daniel. With H.W. no longer being able to communicate and becoming more and more isolated, he would certainly resent any attention some outsider got from his father. The fire was meant to hurt Henry and to do damage to the possessions that legitimized Daniel and Henry's new relationship.
HW starts the fire for one simple reason. Forget the abuse, neglect, betrayl, all meaningless.
His father had money. His father had power. His father even bought him a milkshake. Problem is that daddy drank his too. Never touch another mans dessert.
I...almost peed myself. Wow.
I desperately need to find a 24 hour diner now and get myself a real fucking milkshake. This is getting ridiculous.
As long as we are on milkshakes and since kissthemachine wants one, make sure its a $5.00 milkshake like in Pulp Fiction. If its good enough for Mrs. Wallace, its good enough for us. :)
I'm with kissthemachine, I seriously need a freakin' milkshake. Now. This hunger is gone past the line of patience, it's become torture.
And I thought H.W. started the fire out of rebellion, that's why he ran away after his father saw him.
Oh, and what flavor milkshake? When faced with this serious predicament, you simply need to ask yourself, what would Plainview choose? I'd say chocolate.
Alright, this settles it. We need to take a trip to Jack Rabbit Slims. We'll get Buddy Holly as our waiter and order our $5 shakes and get over this.
...but of course, I will have a straw in both of your milkshakes. My straw will reach acrooooooooss the tables and, well, you know the rest...
i can't decide if he was jealous of henry taking his place at dp's side or because he smelled a rat while reading the journal.
i'm leaning to him knowing that henry would eventually take his place beside his beloved father so he trys to kill him out of jelasy.
We're all exposed to the same evidence and still reach different conclusions. . . That's the beauty of film, ladies and gentlemen.
I might as well add my 2 cents. I think H.W. was just acting out, trying to get his father's attention. I think he was angry because DP would try to get him drunk and leave him alone all day. You figure, here's a boy who spent all day, everyday with his father and was included in all his business dealings - then following the tragic event of losing his hearing, he is cast aside. I think he just wanted attention and negative attention was better than none.
Good one KTM about your straw and the milkshakes.
I was so confused about that...at first I thought it was because he knew who henry was but now I'm convinced that he was just acting out...
and I'm drinking a milkshake right now =)
was craving one all weekend but when I went to get one on saturday it was close to closing time so they had none and I was like whaaat??
mm...
I maybe looking too closely into this movie, (i have seen it four times now). Ever since HW becomes deaf , I took it that Daniel keeps him drunk all of the time so that he can work and not be bothered by HW. This is why he forces him to drink the " milkshake". HW is always in his pajamas all day and put to bed in the day time. This is why HW is awake in the middle of the night starting fires because the alchohol has worn off.
Hw starts the fire with alchohol ( you can tell by the color of the flame). The fire leads to henry's bag (where the diary is) or to henry himself? deaf people who can not communicate will find ways to get their message out! I just think it is significant that they show the diary burnt on the edges.
One other little detail. The ad in the diary for the gun I thought was strange. The only thing I can connect that to is Daniel has the same gun on his back in the opening scenes of the movie. I find this even more odd, Daniel slides on his back after breaking his leg and he is actually sliding on the gun. I thought that was wierd . It looked awkward and uncomfortable.
As much as you may want to think that it was just H.W. acting out (as I also believe). He must have discovered Henry's true identity because H.W. sets it up so the fire runs right up Henry's bed. Watch the movie again and you'll notice it. I've seen it 5 times in theater's now. :D
