Hi all,

What a great
multilayered flick, But does anyone know what style or type of hat Daniel Day-Lewis's
character is wearing during the movie. I must have poured over about fifty
online based hat shops and still can't find anything quite close. I recall Val
Kilmer wore something similar in Tombstone and I looked after I had seen that
movie for the first time with the same result. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I thought you all might enjoy some photos of Greystone Mansion, which was used for the interiors of the film's final scenes.

Fittingly, the mansion was built by Ned Doheny (the only son of Edward L. Doheny, early oil magnate born in Fond du Lac and inspiration for Upton Sinclair's Joe Ross, who then evolved into you-know-who). Ned Doheny was shot and killed in a reported murder-suicide involving a close associate. Some speculate it had something to do with Ned acting as his father's bagman to deliver a bribe to Senator Fall (of "I drink your milkshake" fame).

Alas, no photos here of the bowling alley. It was only recently restored by Jack Fisk and crew for TWBB.

We all know the most famous catchphrase from the movie, and the second most famous one about a few minutes later. But those aren't the only catchphrases "There Will Be Blood" has- and I'm surprised a few of them haven't taken off too. We have a whole list of them.

"Ladies and Gentlemen...."- perhaps not a conventional catchphrase, but it's the first phrase in the film and the one Daniel uses to start a lot of his speeches in the early going.

"I hate most people"- Daniel summing up his worldview.

"I'VE ABANDONED MY CHILD!!!"- I suppose this one has taken off since it's the scene I most often see in "Blood" commercials now, and it will probably be Daniel's Oscar clip. You can also subsititute it for "I'VE ABANDONED MY BOY!!!"

"Bastard from a basket!!"- Daniel's famous last words to H.W

"DRRAAIINNNGEE!!!"- If Daniel's way of delivering "Milkshake" is what makes that such a powerful catchphrase, it should be the same for this pre-milkshake line.

"IIIIII AM THE THIRD REVELATION!!!" Right between "Milkshake" and "I'm finished"

"I tolllldddd you I would eat you!!" You almost miss that one in between Daniel's other lines and Eli screaming for mercy to high heavens.

Come to think of it, counting the two famous lines, there are about six catchphrases in the last 15 minutes alone.

So, other than the two famous phrases, which other famous "Blood" line is best? Did I miss one?

Daniel Plainview: "I drink your milkshake. I drink it up."

Kelis: "My milkshake bring all the boys to the yard."

The lyrics to Kelis' 2003 track 'Milkshake' seem to have an uncanny simpatico with Daniel Plainview. It's as if Kelis was channeling the man in the song. You can almost hear him singing it. Do you suppose Kelis has read Sinclair? Was PTA grooving to the track while writing? Compare and contrast. Debate and discuss.

A lot of the complaints about There Will Be Blood (and there've been more than a few) strike these kinds of disenchanted notes: "a thudding bore," "tempered and wrought, to the point of dullness ... its very scale almost obscures its blankness," or in general simply

O.k., if I this has already been discussed then please excuse my ignorance. My friend reminded me of a photograph of Daniel Day-Lewis sporting a bald head (and possible old man make-up?) that circulated a few months before the film came out. This image was not only circulated on the internet but was printed in mag rags like People and Star. Does anyone know what the heck this image is all about and why it was seemingly discarded? Was this perhaps a P.T.A. trick? Several people have commented on Plainview's lack of aging in the final segment of the movie so I wonder if this was an unused attempt to shoot an older Plainview.

Please respond or hazard a guess. I am attempting to insert the image in question below. He looks like Vincent Price or the old Bob Dylan (sans hair).

OK, high time for another one of these -- let's just stick with the short quail hunting scene, the discovery of earthquake oil, and the "real money" for now, and I'll follow it up with dinner at the Sunday family in a couple of days. So this is 31:00 to 34:00.

- "Dad, look at my shoe!" Cf. Eli's brains on DP's shoes in the last scene, drawing a clear visual connection between the implied metaphor, blood of the lamb vs blood of the earth.

- Gotta love the shoulder grab and the DDL laugh that follows.

- They got some quail!

- "So..." - "So." - "So, so."

- What exactly are the places that DP mentions as a destination for the pipeline? What does this tell us about the location of Little Boston? Somebody have a Google map to link to?

- Dillon Freasier is great in this: "how much will we pay them?" - "Who's that?" - (is that Dillion trying to remember the line or HW trying to remember their name?) "The Sunday family."

- Great reaction when DP says "quail prices."

This scene shows us that HW is more than just a pretty face to have along: DP is grooming him, teaching him, and confiding in him. As their first real scene together, it stands in brutal contrast to their last scene together (bastard in a basket). Here, the affection between the two is palpable. Like the panoramic countryside, opportunity is before them, and DP explains just how he's going to take advantage of it -- and already there's the seedling of trouble, in DP's greedy assertion that he's planning to underpay the Sundays.

I figure the deleted campfire scene must have come either before or after this one?

You follow the life of Daniel Plainview through the whole movie seeing him climb to a place of power, both in his control over others and in his amassing of wealth. In the opening scenes you see him literally climbing up a ladder over and over illustrating his work ethic and stay-on-task drive, and then you see him fall breaking his leg at the bottom of the prospecting pit. In spite of his obvious pain he scrambles to find the silver he sought and gets himself to the surface. The pan up over the looming landscape, which separates him from civilization and help, was immense and full of obstacles, but you know he has no choice but to take it on.

You don’t see him do it, but you imagine him dragging his body up and over the mountains. Then you finally do see him lying on the floor staking his claim while he still lies there with his broken leg unattended. The help he needed was subordinate to his hell-bent focus on his task. Embodied in these few scenes there is a huge insight into his character. It is the whole story metaphorically revealed. Something more than just a leg was broken in that man and what it was we are never really sure, yet we can know that the complications from it were huge.

With that opening scene showing that vast amount of ground to cover we begin to see how he maneuvers through situations, and it foretells something of what his life is all about. I thought these scenes were amazing.

I think this is more of a comprehension question than a critical analysis question.

As far as I can tell, Daniel signs the pipeline deal with Union Oil before he leases the Bandy tract--before, in fact, he ever even talks with Bandy. Is he just so confident in his abilities to get the lease that he's willing to sign the deal without having spoken to Bandy? He is, after all, surveying and taking measure of the land as if he's this confident.

Contra "thick" Al Rose's suggestion, he can't build the pipeline around the Tehachapi Mountains, so he basically needs the lease on Bandy's land. I just found it odd that he'd make the Union deal before having gotten that lease, and perhaps an example of Daniel's overweening confidence. He would have been fucked had he not gotten that lease...

I know this may be a little off topic, but I really love you guys and thought that this is one way I can reach out.

I am going for two contests (I'm uploading that 'Milkshake' video soon!), and one concerns my lovely son, Xander. Ryan Seacrest has a popular morning show on KIIS FM here in Southern California and they just opened up Phase One voting for their 'KIIS My Baby' contest which ends at 5 PM on Friday, March 28th. If we win from our group, we will be able to continue on to Phase Two, which goes on 'til April 8th, which is obviously another glorious day because of the release of our DVD. Basically it's a popularity contest for the 'cutest baby,' but it's good times!

I would absolutely appreciate your time and effort to vote for Xander (and yes, as E. W. has inquired, I pretty much did get his name from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The grand prize is $2500, 2nd prize is $1500, and 3rd prize is $1000. This is reallly good times and a fun title if Xander wins.

There are over 3,000 babies that entered, so the only real way to win is through word-of-mouth and the drive to vote. I started at the end and actually found Xander amongst the plethora of baby pictures. Mind you, ALL the babies are cute, but this will show who really will devote time and effort to vote for a single baby.

Voting is *EASY*! You can vote HERE. *Xander is in Group 110 and he is contestant #18*. If you click on Group 110 and click over to #18 of 25 pictures, you'll see the picture that I entered, but you can see other pictures on my FLICKR and videos on my YOUTUBE channel.

To vote, please follow these instructions:
1. Click HERE.
2. Pick *Contestant #18*.
3. Enter a *valid email address*.
4. Submit it.
5. Check your email to *verify your vote*.
6. Click on the link inside of the email to complete the process.

THEN, ON APRIL 8TH, after voting ;], pick up your copy of 'THERE WILL BE BLOOD' ;]!!! HOORAY!

I appreciate your participation SO MUCH and really hope that this works.

**************************

I completely didn't realize that this was here, so this is how the station explained the actual voting process will go:

C. Voting Period:
PHASE 1 ONLINE VOTING. BEGINS ON FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2008 AT 6:00am AND ENDS AT 5:00pm on FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2008. THE PUBLIC CAN VOTE ONLINE FROM ALL ELIGIBLE ENTRIES BY GOING TO KIISFM.COM. PHOTOS WILL BE RANDOMLY ARRANGED IN GALLERIES CONTAINING NO MORE THAN 25 PHOTOS PER GALLERY. THE ENTRY FROM EACH GALLERY WITH THE MOST ONLINE VOTES WILL ADVANCE TO PHASE 2. ONLY ONE VOTE PER E-MAIL ADDRESS WILL BE ALLOWED. NUMBER OF GALLERIES DEPENDENT ON THE NUMBER OF ELIGIBLE ENTRIES.
PHASE 2 ONLINE VOTING (THE FINALISTS). MONDAY, MARCH 31 – SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 2008. THE PUBLIC CAN VOTE ONLINE FOR THE TOP ENTRIES WITH THE MOST VOTES FROM PHASE 1 ONLINE RESULT. ONLY ONE VOTE PER E-MAIL ADDRESS PER DAY WILL BE ALLOWED.

Judging criteria voters should use for the contest is based on the following:

• Camera friendly nature of the subject
• Originality
• Personality
• Photo quality

Voting is limited to one vote per verified email address. If an entrant receives multiple and/or irregular votes or multiple votes from the same user or users, including but not limited to, votes generated by a robotic, programmed, script, macro, other automated means or other source, the Station reserves the right to disqualify the finalist in its sole discretion.

D. How to Win:

At the conclusion of the Phase 2 voting period, the Station will select the Grand Prize Winner based on the photo which receives the most votes. The 2nd and 3rd place winners will be determined by the second and third highest votes, respectively.

In the event that two or more contestants have the same number of votes; the Station will conduct a runoff on March 28th for Phase 1, and April 8th for Phase 2, between 9 am and 4 pm.

If a tie continues to exist after the runoff, the Station will select a panel of judges to select the winner(s) based on the judging criteria, listed above. All decisions of the judges will be final.

*****************************

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and if you have any questions or requests or ANYTHING, I'd be very happy to help you in any way I can.

Alright, I figured this would be a good place to post fan fiction.

I was mad enough at FanFiction.net for lacking Gangs of New York stories, but hello? NO THERE WILL BE BLOOD SECTION?! We need to resolve this problem!

I work in an art museum, and today, one of the museum visitors dropped a wad of cash (not really, it was like, six bucks), so I was walking through the gallery looking for this guy, to return his money. And what do I come face to face with, in the American section?? Well, none other than this:

http://magart.rochester.edu/CUS.18.FlashFullView._211$3487**5932909

Yeah, right there in front of me. Actually, I knew this painting, but I couldn't remember if the gallery owned it, or whether I knew it from one of my art history books. I always walk into the museum using a different route, since I'm always carrying my (museum-approved) coffee mug, I try to not to walk through the main areas of the gallery. So, I don't when I last saw this painting, but well before I saw TWBB! Kind of freaky.

Ok, most have you have probably watched the deleted haircutting scene on youtube. (In case you haven't seen it, HW cuts Daniel's hair before they go off for the well dedication.) What do you guys think of that scene?? I was amazed by it. The way HW says "hold still," the way Daniel swats the bug on his arm and starts laughing when HW nicks him with the scissors, then he says "that was my fault." What I can make of this, and my opinion is probably totally wrong, BUT prior to this, it seems we always see DP and HW together in the pursuit of oil. They enjoy each other's company on the "quail" hunt, but it's a means to an end. In this brief scene, there is no one else around, this is their day-to-day life, together, and they seem to have an unspoken communication, which makes it even more tragic when HW is injured and the relationship is fractured. Btw, HW does a pretty good job on Daniel's hair. I can see why he trusts him to cut it.

The story is actually based on the Taft / Elk Hills area of Central California. I live about an about an hour away from this area. I worked in Taft for several years. I had a great grandfather that was an engineer in Taft during this time during this Oil boom (1910-1920). He died at the age of twenty one. I have always felt a deep connection with him even though he died nearly 100 years ago. My great grandmother always said i have his talents and looks. We only have one picture of him.

The movie does a great job of recreating this area. It is a very ugly desolate area. Taft looks just like little boston.

www.geocities.com/espee9164/oil.industry.html

Check out this website it looks exactly like scenes from the movie. The directer visited the Oil Museum in Taft California several times to get ideas. The derrick used in the movie is a replica of the one in Taft.

Brahms's Violin Concerto in D major as Leitmotif

This film really had some beautiful work as far as music goes. The original scoring and the select classical pieces present a wonderful juxtaposition that adds such a depth and complexity to an already superb film. Everything meshes together so well, there is not a single moment where the music is out of place or out of synch with the mood and setting.

I particularly love PTA for bookending his bloody chronicle with the Brahms concerto (as you may surmise by my SN). It's such an upbeat and lively piece -almost flippant, considering the context. In a way that's fitting since in that aspect it's consistent with DP's irreverence and unapologetic, cavalier attitude towards most everything... I'll never be able to listen to it the same way again because now in my mind, it's almost like it's been christened as DP's unofficial Hymn to Oil or something like that.

Now I can appreciate a lot of different kinds of music but when it comes to critiquing and analyzing it knowledgeably that's an entirely different matter altogether. So my question is, can Brahms's Violin Concerto in D major be analyzed and discussed within the context of the film? Is it possible? Any conservatory students or someone who knows anything about composition in our forum...?
